Here are some new pieces ive been working on, just a series of larger works, i call it the man with the long face series (super creative!) even though they are all different dudes. I'll be doing a bunch in the next little while, and gearing up for a kids book too that should be freaking awesome, and of course if anyone wants to buy anything give me a shout! oh yeah the surgeon is on illustration board and still needs framing, the time keeper is on canvas board and im not sure if it will get framed or not.

I got to spend two weeks in Paris, Cannes and Nice, so expect some awesome pictures once I get down to editing, it might take a bit, in the mean time hears one of the studies for a bigger piece I'm working on, this is in progress and the whole thing should be much bigger and painted. Hello Hello, if anyone is listening, hello. I have here today some pieces that are somewhat special to moi, they are pieces I did for a show a little while ago where I was able to provide illustrations for an episode of the series "Great Canadian Books" for the book Whale Music by Paul Quarrington, if you would like to catch the episode it has aired on bookTV and will be on Bravo sometime in the near/far future. It was a lot of fun as I had creative freedom. Each episode has readings from the chosen book by different people and features a different illustrator per episode. If its of any interest, the reason I went so heavily with markers was actually after my first pitch of sketches, the director said they wanted it to be all in the marker, I was expecting to go full colour but I think it turned out cool, anyways, these are just a choice few of my favorites, maybe i'll post some others later.

its been a while since my last post, quick news, I'm officially graduated, 4 years, now what? only the future knows, for now I'm trying to keep busy with some personal projects while job hunting

For now I wanted to show off a project Ive been working on, its for the upcoming labyrinth bookstore art show, where you customize a blank white mighty muggs figure, not sure yet on the deadline so if anyone is interested in joining check out http://animationroadshow.blogspot.com/ for information. I got a new ipod touch for xmas and heres a couple doodles on the app Brushes (better ones to come as i get used to it), i also got a stylus to draw with.
Compared to a nintendo ds with Colors, the ipod feels better, and has a better screen, the program has better controls (like undo) and way more zoom, the only downsides are; no pressure sensitivity, and the stylus feels weird at first (the tip is like a round sponge, whereas the ds feels like a pen tip) plus the ds has dual screens which is great for details while seeing the whole image. Also Brushes cost me $2.99 (really thats nothing for a program, but on the ds everything is free with a flashcard :), but this has the bonus that the dude is consistently updating his program as he now can make a couple dollars from it, and in 3 days i got an update that fixed some issues, and with free updates thats awesome.
Personally I prefer the ipod with brushes over the ds even without pressure, the colour and feel is just better, and the brush selection is better. I also just got Flipbook on the ipod, so next up will be some little animations, and man its an awesome pocket animation program, its a million times better then animanatee on ds (which still rocked) but flipbook was $9.99, so a little more cost be def worth it.
Finally to all you DS diehards who are also super techno fans (im lookin at you Garman) GET KORG, its a drummachine/synthesizer program on ds that you can make awesome techno and music with (sold officially a ebgames if you dont download)

warm up today was a few sketches of friends characters for their 4th year films, which have been looking amazing! i feel dwarfed in a sea of giants (i also suck at poetry, but had to try, sorry Tapan). the man so happily enjoying his burger is from the royal winter fair, the only place you can meet, greet and eat animals alllllll day. and the kid on the horribly drawn 4x4 is a random character im working on.

Most of you already know how to make custom brushes in photoshop, theres also a million other tutorials so Im going to do this very quick and messy. First take a picture of a fatass pidgeon, then crop it, then drop the saturation of the whole image to make it b&w, (make sure the image size isnt too big or the brush will be super slow) then go to edit -> press define brush preset. Now you will have a brush that looks like 1 in that tiny jpg. Then edit your brush settings by turning the stamp spacing to 1%, under shape dynamics turn on pen pressure , then in other dynamics set flow jitter to pen pressure. THEN ENJOY! the last image is one of my characters I painted with the pidgeon (and totally inspired by Garrett's scott pilgrim piece)

7 - Brainbot - In 2045 a small series of robots were produced to combat mutant creatures. The brains are taken from mortally wounded humans, they need to be fresh for the transplant to take. Emotions are controlled by electronic sensors but some were cheaply made a known to cause awol droids, good and bad.
8 - Gary - A young sasquatch, born in northern manitoba, currently residing somewhere in the yukon. Its sasquatch tradition to abandon there young high up in the tree tops, its seen as a method to ensure only the strong and smart survive...
9 - Tony Grime - Contract killer for the mob, born somewhere in Europe. He does not enjoy to laugh, he considers it a sort of psychological control and therefor will kill anyone who makes him laugh. I cant say much else or my life will be in danger..

#5&6 Gladice and Eugene -The oldest combined age for a couple on the moon. They are residents of on of the moons many "off-earth" retirement communities.

#7 needs colour, hes one you might recognize though. Im trying to catch up here after finding out halfway into the first week. Ill be back on track by Sunday.

Who would have thought it would be Nintendo on its gameboy platform to put out the top pocket digital sketchbook on the market! The DS loaded with colours should be in every artists and gamers pocket! Its got everything essential, pressure sensitive, key quickkeys (2x and 4x zoom with hand tool to navigate while zoomed in, eyedropper for blending, and awesome colour selection with hard and soft brushes with size and opacity adjustment. plus the second screen is always updating your image, so even when zoomed in you can still get that full view to see how things are working. Tons of fun, worth buying a DS just for this, not to mention all the awesome games (personally cant wait for ff tactics 2 to come out). This is the perfect colour thumbnailing tool.

The Labyrinth has now invaded my home

If it wasn't enough having them tempt me with regular booksales at school, now the Labyrinth has there bookstore a short bike ride from my house, right at Spadina and Bloor. These are just some of the awesome books Ive picked up this summer, and I suggest anyone in the neighborhood check it out. in the pics are: The art of Deanna Marsigliese (beautiful book), The art of Ratatouille (has amazing designs by Carter Goodrich), Glam -Javier Guzman, Mariachi Samurai -Jose Lopez, Desene - Ovi, Desk - Clair Wendling, Belle du Jour - Bill Pressing, Chris sanders Second sketchbook, Sparrow 4 - Shane Glines, and The art of animal character design - David Coleman (who just won an emmy for his work on class of 3000)

I have to say that the Chris Sanders and Bill Pressing sketchbooks are my most recent favorites

and yes that is a blurry pic of George A. Romaro kicking it at the bloor Cinema, it was cool to see him but I was very tired, we also got to see some teaser footage of the upcoming Diary of the Dead, his new film which is based on the usual zombie plot, only this time its at the very start of the outbreak, when the first dead rise. Looks pretty cool and funny/gory, always a good combo.

Just went to the Toronto FC game and got to see them set a new league record! the longest goaless streak! weeeeeeee! it was very fun though, and the tickets were right in the thick of the hardcore tfc fans so it was shouting and cheering the whole game through. These are just a couple recent sketches, except the old scooter dude, that was back in may probably, the little monster is a quick doodle with a texture test, personally i like it better without.
